A French Open sans the French: No local players left at Roland Garros after 2 rounds

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:22:22 GMT

PARIS (AP) — The day before the start of this year’s French Open, the last man from the country to win its Grand Slam tournament, Yannick Noah, was feted to mark the 40th anniversary of his championship.Noah performed a rock concert on a temporary stage set up behind a baseline in the main stadium, and tournament director Amelie Mauresmo, a former No. 1-ranked player and two-time major champion for France, danced right along. Video highlights from Noah’s career, including that 1983 run to the trophy, were shown on scoreboards. All in all, it amounted to a celebration of some of the glory days of French tennis. There hasn’t been much to celebrate for the local fans over the days since: when the third round began on the red clay of Paris on Friday, there was not one player for the folks in the stands to serenade with “La Marseillaise,” the national anthem, or encourage with yells of “Allez!”That’s because all 29 players from France — 10 women, 19 men — in the singles fields already wer...

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A federal lawsuit filed Friday challenges an Arkansas law that would subject librarians and booksellers to criminal charges if they provide “harmful” materials to minors.A coalition that includes the Central Arkansas Library System in Little Rock filed the challenge to the law, which takes effect Aug. 1. The new law also creates a new process to challenge library materials and request that they be relocated to areas not accessible by kids. The lawsuit comes as lawmakers in an increasing number of conservative states are pushing for measures making it easier to ban or restrict access to books. The number of attempts to ban or restrict books across the U.S. last year was the highest in the 20 years the American Library Association has been tracking such efforts. The lawsuit said the fear of prosecution under Arkansas’ law, which Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed in March, could prompt libraries and booksellers to no longer carry titles that cou...
