DETROIT (AP) — A 60-year-old Detroit man will serve 15 months of probation after threatening to kill Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.James Toepler was sentenced Tuesday under a specialized mental health treatment court, the Michigan Attorney General’s office said Wednesday in a release.He also was ordered to have no contact with Whitmer or Benson, and to have no contact with their offices, no malicious contact with 911 emergency response services or Secretary of State branch offices.Toepler pleaded no contest in September in 36th District Court in Detroit to one count of malicious use of telecommunications services. The threats to kill Whitmer, Benson and others were made June 23, 2021, in a telephone call to the Detroit Police Department’s 911 Call Center.Toepler is to report Nov. 1 to the specialized mental health treatment court where appropriate treatment will be determined. CHICAGO — Over $100,000 worth of merchandise was stolen after an SUV crashed into a Near West Side shoe store early Wednesday morning.At around 4:30 a.m., officers responded to The Flee Club, located in the 2200 block of West Taylor Street.Authorities found an SUV, which crashed through the front of the store. DUPAGE COUNTY, lll. — The trial for a mother accused of helping her son dispose of a body in 2018 has begun in DuPage County.Candice Jones, 43, has been charged in the murder of Michael Armendariz.Armendariz, 20, was reported missing on Jan. 18, 2018. Prosecutors allege Armendariz left his Naperville apartment shortly after 9 p.m. on Jan. 14, 2018, after receiving a Snapchat from 21-year-old Cassandra Green. CHICAGO — Four armed robberies involving a black SUV were reported near Logan Square and Bucktown Tuesday night into early Wednesday.Most of the armed robberies took place in under a half hour with one of them also taking place in West Town. DENVER (KDVR) – A bear attacked a security guard inside the kitchen of an Aspen resort earlier this week, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) department confirmed.Officials with CPW were dispatched to the St. Regis Aspen Resort late on Monday night, after a security guard investigating reports of the bear surprised the animal inside the hotel's kitchen, according to CPW. The bear reportedly responded by attacking the guard, scratching his back and knocking him to the ground.The man was able to flee and call 911, CPW said in a news release. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and released early Tuesday.Wildlife officers later learned the bear "had entered the hotel through a series of doors near the courtyard" before finding the hotel's kitchen. MANHATTAN, N.Y. (WPIX) – A customer was freed from a safety deposit room in Manhattan's Diamond District on Wednesday morning after getting locked inside the night before, according to authorities in New York City.The 23-year-old man had been accessing his safety deposit box at a facility operated by DGA Securities on Tuesday night when an employee closed the vault without realizing a customer was still inside, Deputy Assistant Chief John Sarrocco of the FDNY told reporters Wednesday. The FDNY was notified of the incident at around 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Officials arrived and were able to communicate with the customer via a phone in the vault room, Chief Sarrocco said.
